We are happy to welcome the return visit of the Wihan Quartet, who will be playing three well loved examples of the string quartet repertoire.
The Quartet has been described by International Record Review as: one of the best quartets in the world today. Since winning the London International String Quartet Competition in 1991 they have developed an impressive international career, which includes visits to major festivals in Europe and the Far East.
Mozart String Quartet in C , K465, 'TheDissonance'
Beethoven String Quartet No 11 in F minor, Op 95, 'Serioso'
Schubert String Quartet No 12 in C minor, D703, 'Quartettsatz'
Janacek String Quartet No 2, 'Intimate Letters'
The quartet’s discs of Beethoven, Schubert and Dvorak received many accolades including ‘Recording of the Year’ by MusicWeb. Dvorák’s Op. 61, which we are to hear, was described in BBC Music Magazine as ‘the best recorded performance I’ve encountered’ and the quartet’s CD release, of Schubert Quartets was awarded ‘Outstanding’ by International Record Review and ‘Recommended’ by The Strad.
In 2017, after 32 years in the Wihan, cellist Ales Kasprik decided to stop playing in the Quartet for personal reasons. The Quartet have been very fortunate to find a very good substitute, Matej Stepanek, one of the finest young cellists of his generation.
